History Of NSS

NSS unit of our college was established in the year 1991 with 35 students with the following objectives:

  1. To provide community exposure to our NSS volunteers, develop sense of social and civic responsibilities.
  2. To create an awareness in the local slum areas and nearby community about many social issues.
  3. To generate leadership and capacity building in students.
  4. To practice communal harmony as Bhiwandi itself has diversified in religious belief.
  5. To implement green practices such as the use of public transport, bicycles, Plastic free campus, paperless office etc.
  6. To conduct outreach programmes.
  7. To sensitize students for social and cross cutting issues.
  8. To organize National festivals and Birth/Death Anniversaries of great Indian personalities
  9. To plan and organize appropriate activities to increase consciousness about national identities and symbols: Fundamental duties and right of Indian Citizens and other constitutional obligations.

It was only 2 nd NSS unit of Women College of Mumbai University after Sophia College Mumbai.
Our College was founded to accommodate female students of orthodox families to support women empowerment through education.
During last 28 years, NSS has progressed to great heights; it is one of the largest NSS Unit of Mumbai University with 300 volunteers. We have hosted and organised as well as participated in many National and International events. Our students have participated in almost all levels of activities of NSS at National level. We had representation in SRD (State Republic day), Adventure camp; National Integration Camp and State level Disaster Management Camp – AVHAAN.

  • Our Unit Established Community Center in the college and in the adopted area Madhav Nagar.
  • Concept of Kitchen Garden was initiated by our unit and this year also we are planning to setup 1500 kitchen garden in our adopted area.
  • We organized Most Clean House Contest, Most Educated Women of the area
  • Healthy Baby Contest for the community of adopted area.
  • Unit helped NGO-SETU to Set up Study Center for labourer’s Children.
  • Our volunteers created awareness on electricity conservation. 1500 houses were adopted by 300 volunteers.
  • Conducted survey on behalf of Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS) for flood affected people of Bhiwandi in the year 2005.
  • Organized College Community Convention, where Tehsildar, Commissioner, DCP and Doctors were present along with community people.
  • Conducted survey for Government Rehabilitation Center Thane. Physically Challenged people of villages of Bhiwandi were surveyed.
  • Our Unit was the leading unit to start Road Safety Programme and Concept of Traffic Ambassador with Bhiwandi Traffic Police in the year 2010.
  • Conducted Milk Testing for 200 samples from Bhiwandi town with the help of Consumer Guidance Society of India. Report published in news papers and FDI took action on our findings.
  • Our College has setup community library in the adopted slum area, Madhav Nagar, Bhiwandi.
  • A team of 50 NSS volunteers “The Young Teachers” enrolled every year for the literary programmes. Our volunteers conducted special coaching Classes for Slow learners in 7 adopted Municipal schools, other Schools and community Centers. They also conducted special literacy programme for adult women and other illiterate people of adopted area, counseled them and helped for readmission.
  • Conducted special classes under Times Foundation Project for 10 Municipal schools and 1000 students of class VIII.
  • Conduction of Surveys on issues like cleanliness, Gender Equality, health and hygiene, Disaster Management, Role of Women in Politics etc.
  • Beach Cleaning Drive, Total sanitation in Adopted area, and Safai-Utsav (Festival of Cleanliness) are conducted by our Unit.
  • Technical Training for Disaster Management was given to all the members, NSS volunteers and selected community people.
  • NSS Unit conducted mock drills in association with District Disaster Management Cell for the college and many places around Bhiwandi.
  • Every year 30 Students are selected and trained for Disaster Management.
  • Every year over all beneficiaries are more than 500 including community.
  • Unit conducts every year Workshops on Women Empowerment, Cleanliness, Legal Advice for Women, Consumer Awareness etc.
  • NSS Unit conducted Blood Donation Drive. 48 to 102 Units are collected every year.

  3. In the year 2009 Ghotsai village was adopted for skill development programme which is situated 40 km from college in Titwala town.
  4. Soft skills like English speaking, Personality Development etc. are conducted through NGO’s.
  5. Permanent Center for Tailoring and Beautician courses was established with Help of NGO. It has been working since last 5years. Thousands are benefitted by these programmes every year.
